The other day I had a call with our CPO and one of our contractors about ongoing projects here at PrivCo. We were online across the globe and multiple timezones -- me sipping my morning coffee in LA, Jon with his post-lunch caffeine kick in New York, and Tania presumably holding out for her craft cocktail on vacation in a remote part of India.

Our team, like many, has expanded beyond its pre-pandemic offices in New York City. We've swapped in-person meetings for slightly more complicated scheduling but arguably, we have a more happy, flexible remote team.

Oh the Bureaucracy
If you’ve ever spent any time Googling how to hire and pay proper taxes for an employee overseas, there are companies who take the guesswork out of it. Deel is one such enabler. It was founded in 2019, fortuitously ahead of the pandemic, and has since expanded through three acquisitions and $254MM in funding to reach a $12BN valuation. The company has a handy guide for hiring in most international countries, for both employees and contractors.

Remote.com is another example of a tech firm making it easier to expand the talent search and enable your workforce to move around. Ever thought of ditching that metropolitan city for the coast of Portugal? I have. The company has even partnered with AngelList to make remote hiring simpler.

A bigger talent pool
While headlines continue to feature layoffs from Tesla to Redfin, demand for top talent remains competitive. An executive from Robert Half’s technical recruiting team says, “When people say things are slowing, I ask, ‘On what data?’ Everyone wants to say the stock market is down. Well, the stock market is not always an indicator of hiring.” In-demand roles continue to be competitive for employers, and an expanded pool of potential candidates can only help.
