As a woman who has pitched investors before--about a femtech product--I can't tell you how many times a male investor told me he had to ask his wife about my idea. Investors need empathy, imagination, and skill to think outside of their own use cases. As a result, it's easy to understand why the demographics of venture-backed businesses skew white and male, as white males were the first VCs. Let's look at where the demographics are now within the roster of partners at VC and private equity firms.

The Information just released an update to its 2018 report on diversity in venture capital. A quick overview of the numbers reveals that white men now hold 53% of all decision-making roles at the top U.S. VC firms, down from 64% in 2018. Out of 1,000 senior investment professionals, that number is 66%. Asian partners have made gains, reaching 27% this year, up 3% from 2018.

Andreessen Horowitz has the most decision-making female partners with 17 out of 59 total partners. Sequoia Capital has 7 female partners out of 24. On average, women make up 22% of VC partners.
