The Future is No Code

The Future is No Code
June 29, 2020

“The future of coding is no coding at all,” says Chris Wanstrath, CEO at GitHub. Coronavirus and the WFH shift that followed have accelerated the arrival of that future. Current forced work-at-home mandates have scrambled and scattered enterprise IT teams as they struggle to juggle priorities. There simply isn't time to respond to new development requests, which makes a simpler coding environment that much more attractive.

While the no-code development space has existed for quite some time, it is finally catching mainstream attention. AWS today announced the beta launch of Amazon Honeycode, a new, fully managed low-code/no-code development tool that aims to make it easy for anybody in a company to build their own applications. All of these tools are backed by a database in AWS and a web-based, drag-and-drop interface builder.

No-code allows companies to take ideas, using minimal time and resources, and launch a live product very quickly. This path offers a less-costly alternative to building a team of designers and developers, or outsourcing to an agency, ultimately befitting an agile post-COVID environment.

No-Code Developing Tools:

Bubble is a visual programming language and application platform as a service, developed by Bubble Group, that enables non-technical people to build web-applications without needing to type code. Instead, users draw the interface by dragging and dropping elements onto a canvas and defining workflows to control the logic. Bubble's vision is to make hand coding largely obsolete. While the platform is visual, it does require some learning and can be used to create more advanced functionality than what is possible with template-oriented web application builders such as Wix. It is used in schools for educational purposes, and by other organizations for commercial purposes.

AppSheet provides a no-code development platform for application software, which allows users to create mobile, tablet, and web applications using data sources like Google Drive, DropBox, Office 365, and other cloud-based spreadsheet and database platforms. The platform can be utilized for a broad set of business use cases including project management, customer relationship management, field inspections, and personalized reporting. AppSheet was acquired by Google in January 2020.

If This Then That, also known as IFTTT, is a freeware web-based service that creates chains of simple conditional statements, called applets. In addition to the web-based application, the service runs on iOS and Android. In February 2015, IFTTT renamed its original application to IF and released a new suite of apps called Do, with which users can create shortcut applications and actions. As of 2015, IFTTT users created about 20 million recipes each day with just one of the Do apps. All of the functionalities of the Do suite of apps have since been integrated into a redesigned IFTTT app.
