No-code development essentially is the method of building applications without the need to or skill to write code. The companies that have developed no-code platforms make it easy to create advanced applications using drag-and-drop features through pre-configured blocks.

Why no-code?
Aside from the benefit of just being easier to use, no-code platforms have made it easier for business and IT professionals to make the best of their skills, speed up prototyping and bring products to market, as well as make it easier for business-side employees like marketers to provide insight into the software development process compared to traditional programming processes where business and IT often do not overlap.

The future of no-code
No-code is driving the future of rapid application development at a time when there aren’t enough software developers to meet the high demands of application development. By empowering more people beyond the IT department to create simple but professional applications, the companies who develop no-code platforms have been able to grow their business significantly. This idea extends beyond purely website development to automation of processes.

Six private companies in no-code

  • Automattic is the company notably behind Wordpress.com, one of the most popular website builders as well as Tumblr, which it acquired in 2019. The company is responsible for the content management platforms that power many blogs and news sites.
  • Bubble is a provider of a visual programming platform that allows users to create web applications with no coding experience. Its platform handles the infrastructure and DevOps automatically.
  • Zapier automates workflows without the need to know code through simply setting up triggers for tasks, such as if a payment doesn’t go through or an alert is sent. The company raised a new round of undisclosed funding from Sequoia Capital in January this year.
  • Airtable puts the power of a flexible database into the hands of creators and enables teams to model the things they work on, define relationships between things, and create views explicitly tailored to their work. They’ve replaced spreadsheets and older project management tools and have raised two rounds during the pandemic.
  • Webflow helps users build responsive and dynamic websites without knowing how to code. Its Round B funding of $140MM  in January helped it join the unicorn club.
  • Unqork focuses on finance and insurance companies, equipping them with a no-code enterprise application platform. The New York-based company raised two rounds of funding in 2020, also elevating it to unicorn status.
