Femtech refers to healthcare solutions that focus on and address the end-to-end needs of female health exclusively, including diagnostic tools, software, mobile apps, and wearables. Although women spend an estimated $500BN on female-related medical expenses, traditional healthcare R&D allocates only 4% on research into women’s health issues. One reason women-related needs have lagged behind is that life sciences research was overwhelmingly “tailored to the male body.”

Nonetheless, the industry has been growing tremendously, even as traditional femtech has revolved around fertility, and companies are expanding, including into precision medication technology. It’s estimated that investment into femtech will reach up to $9BN by 2024 and correlates with findings that women are 75% to 85% more likely than men to use digital tools for healthcare needs.

Six American Startups in Femtech

  • Nurx is a Series C startup that helps people get access to birth control more easily and faster, delivering to doorsteps at low cost. It has also expanded into STI and hormonal testing and treatment.
  • Ava Science is a Series B wearables technology company that has developed a sensory device to help a woman detect her next fertile window and ovulation precisely.
