Al Jazeera Media Network is a Private Foundation for Public Benefit (PFPB) under Qatari law (also known as a Private Corporation of Public Utility) operating in media network consisting of over twenty channels Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera English, Al Jazeera Balkans, Al Jazeera Sport, Al Jazeera Mubasher, Al Jazeera Documentary, the Al Jazeera Media Training and Development Center and the Al Jazeera Center for Studies. Originally funded by the Qatari government, Al Jazeera Media Network changed its legal personality from an independent public corporation to a PFPB and is now independent from the Government of Qatar. Al Jazeera Media Network was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Doha, Qatar. In early 2013, Al Jazeera purchased American cable television news network Current TV.
