Airbnb, Inc. is a privately-held online marketplace allowing anyone from private residents to commercial properties to rent out their extra space. Listings include, but are not limited to: vacation rentals, private rooms, entire apartments, and bed and breakfasts. The closely-held Internet start-up, in addition to extensive media coverage, has raised significant interest from venture capital investors. Airbnb's headquarters are located in San Francisco, California. The company was founded in 2007 by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk.

History
In 2008, Airbnb founders Chesky and Gebbia concluded their studies at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and moved from Providence to San Francisco. The two realized the need for a service like Airbnb upon offering up their apartment for attendees of an overbooked industrial design conference. When the two original founders needed a developer, Gebbia called on Nathan Blecharczyk, a former temporary roommate he had met on Craigslist. Blecharczyk, as Airbnb's founder and first engineer, now holds the position of CTO at the company. Blecharczyk, although first moving to Silicon Valley after graduating from Harvard, was involved with Internet technology since he was thirteen-years-old, when he ran a coding business that made nearly $1 million in revenues.
