Split-Ups

A split up is when a firm is broken up in a series of spin-offs. After a split-up, the parent company no longer exists, only the spun-off businesses survive. In a split-up transaction, new classes of stock are created to track the operations of each of the individual subsidiaries. The new classes of shares are distributed as a dividend to current stockholders and the parent company is dissolved.
