Detailed Business Description: UltraCell Corporation
The Technology Behind the Cell
A fuel cell does not operate like a battery does. While both use silent electrochemical reactions to produce electricity, a battery has a fixed amount of chemical it can convert and eventually goes dead. A fuel cell, like a car engine, can continuously provide power as long as the fuel is available.
UltraCell made its debut on the fuel cell market on July 14, 2006—four years after it was founded—with the XX25. Rated at a maximum output of 25 watts, the XX25 was capable of delivering three days of continuous power to mobile devices like laptops. More importantly, however, the cell also represented the first commercialization of RMFC technology.
Traditional fuel cells like Solid-Oxide Cells (SOC) require expensive, large, and intricate components, causing the overall cell to be unwieldy for mobile operations. Reformed Methanol Fuel Cells (RFMC), on the other hand, process a combination of liquid methanol and water into small amounts of… Continue Reading →
