Tumblr Revenue Model
Until 2012 Tumblr operated with low revenues and a nascent business model. Tumblr's primary focus was scale. As of February 2013, Tumblr had 86 million blogs, 18 billion page views per month and 170 million unique visitors (up from 21.8 million in March 2012).
Although generating revenues has not been Tumblr's primary focus, Tumblr had an early modest revenue model. However, it has largely shunned large-scale advertising programs such as banners that would clutter its pages for users. As a result, until mid-2012 Tumblr revenues were derived primarily from selling premium blog templates at prices ranging from $9 to $49 and splitting those sales with developers. Another form of revenue stems from the "highlighted post" feature; $1 allows the user to mark a post with a custom sticker which shows up on a reader's dashboard, highlighting its importance.
