Detailed Business Description: Suniva Inc.
From Georgia Tech to Suniva
Founded by photovoltaic (PV) professor Ajeet Rohatgi in 2006, Suniva is a graduate of Georgia Tech's Commercialization Services, a VC-esque organization that helps grow innovations into startups. In this case, Rohatgi won a patent in 2005 for a cheaper alternative in the production of solar panels. Along with executive John Baumstark?former CEO of Tradex Technologies?and $5.5M from New Enterprise Association, Dr. Rohatgi started his company off the ground and began producing the solar cells he had been pursuing for the last twenty years. "Suniva" was a supposed to be temporary name for the organization, but it stuck.
ARTisun and the 20%+ benchmark
Like many industries involving silicon, the photovoltaic industry is complex. There are six stages in its value chain to get to the actual solar panel. First silicon, the second most abundant substance on Earth, is refined and purified to create a new substance. This material, called polysilicon, is then… Continue Reading →
