Detailed Business Description: Space Exploration Technologies Corp.
Early Stages
Space Exploration Technologies Corporation was founded in 2002 by Silicon Valley entrepreneur, founder of Paypal and Tesla Motors, Elon Musk. Musk lacks a degree in an aerospace-related field, but is the company's acting CEO and Chief Technological Officer.
Elon Musk initially bootstrapped SpaceX with $100 million of his estimated $2 billion net worth. His initial idea for SpaceX was to purchase a Russian rocket and use it for space flights. The Russian rocket proved too costly, so Musk opted for SpaceX to build its own rockets.
SpaceX's facilities in Hawthorne, California cost the company approximately $400 million.
SpaceX has benefitted from the Obama administration's initiative to privatize Space Cargo Delivery and astronaut transportation to and from the International Space Station. NASA ended these missions in summer 2011, and per the Obama administration's request, is focused on missions to Mars and a successful asteroid landing.
