Founded in 2007 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss, SoundCloud is headquartered in Berlin, Germany with an office in San Francisco, California. SoundCloud provides a platform for users to upload and share their music as well as download and comment on other's users' tracks. The service also provides a wave map of the music tracks uploaded offering a starting point for discussion between users. SoundCloud operates a freemium model where additional features such as widgets, spotlight, statistics, increased upload limits, and increased number of groups are provided for a charge. SoundCloud has received VC funding from Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures, Union Square Ventures, and Index Ventures with investments from stars such as Ashton Kutcher.

Business Model

SoundCloud provides a social platform for users to upload, share, comment on and listen to streaming audio. Users can upload not only music but a wide range of sounds, podcasts, etc. Functioning much like a YouTube or Flickr for sound and music creators, SoundCloud focuses on allowing users to share and interact as easily as possible using the platform. Mobile applications for iPhone and Android further enhance SoundCloud's accessibility and ease of use. More advanced users can develop sharing and content creation apps, extending SoundCloud's features beyond the default platform. The platform is not built to share licensed music. Instead, the focus is on originally created music and remixes. SoundCloud does provide users with Creative Commons Licensing capabilities.
