Rovio, originally named Relude, was founded by three Finnish students following a technology competition sponsored by Nokia and Hewlett Packard. Following the competition and the success of the founders' creation King of the Cabbage World,, the team incorporated their company and focused on producing multiplayer, real-time games.
In 2005, Relude received $1 million in angel funding and rechristened itself as Rovio Mobile.
Angry Birds
Since its creation in December, 2009, Angry Birds has defined the Finnish app developer's success. Selling for $1 each, Angry Birds downloads topped 30 million on the Apple App Store in 2010. Rovio began to sell the game on other devices, including Android-based smartphones, computers, and video game consoles. Separate, themed versions of the game have also been released. In September 2011, total downloads of the game reached 350 million. Rovio regularly releases free updates and new levels for Angry Birds applications.
