Detailed Business Description: Red Apple Group Inc.
History
1970-1985: Early Beginnings: Foundation and Rapid Growth
In a typical rags to riches story, the New York based John A. Catsimatidis, a dropout from New York University, started the Red Apple Group as an individual store with starting capital of $1500 in 1970. Catsimatidis’s initiatives enabled the company to expand rapidly and the store grew to a chain of 12 grocery stores by the end of 1976, netting a profit of $800,000 by the end of the 1976 fiscal year. Within the next 5 years, by 1981, the company had more than doubled its size, growing to a chain of 27 stores. By this point, the Red Apple Group was operating in locations around Bronx and Manhattan. The company was able to register annual sales of $40 million during this period and by fiscal 1985, its sales grew to $110 million.
