Petco Animal Supplies, Inc.
Business Summary
Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. is a privately-held pet specialty retailer headquartered in San Diego, California. PetCo was formally known as United Pharmaceutical Company (UPCO). Founded by Walter Evans in 1965 in La Mesa, California, the mission was to buy quality pet and veterinary supplies and resell them at discount prices to the general public. In 1979, UPCO officially changed its name to Petco to better represent the products it is selling. PetCo’s products are used by owners of dogs, cats, aquatic fish, birds, rodents and reptiles. In 1999, Petco Foundation was established as a charitable program to support and promote animal welfare partners national wide. PetCo filed for an initial public offering in 1994 as the largest Pet Supply Chain store, but went private in 2000. Two years later, PetCo reentered public space but was shortly acquired by two private equity firms, Texas Pacific Group and Leonard Green & Partners in a LBO deal worth $1.9 billion.
