New York Mets
Business Summary
The New York Mets are a privately-held Major League Baseball franchise. The New York Mets play their home games and hold their business operations at Citi Field. Founded in 1962, the New York Mets are owned by Fred Wilpon and partners via the Sterling Equities real-estate focused holding company and are based in Flushing, New York. The New York Mets have recently suffered financial difficulty after losing money consistently, which was exacerbated after the New York Mets were found to have profited from the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme; a subsequently lawsuit from the trustee for Madoff scheme victimes sought over $300 million in illicit profits from the Mets, creating a sudden liquidity crunch, until the case was settled in 2012. The New York Mets' attempts to sell a minority stake in 2011 to hedge fund billionaire David Einhorn collapsed.

Detailed Business Description: New York Mets
New York Mets Settle Madoff Trustee Lawsuit
In 2012, the owners of the New York Mets scored a major legal victory when the trustee for the victims of Bernard L. Madoff’s vast fraud agreed to abandon hundreds of millions of dollars in claims against them in exchange for a financial settlement substantially less than the financially ruinous maximum originally sought.
The Mets owners agreed to pay the trustee $162 million, but that figure could be reduced as the Madoff bankruptcy litigation continues.
The trustee, Irving H. Picard, had initially sought $1 billion, declaring that the owners had enriched themselves over many years of profitable investing with Mr. Madoff while ignoring repeated warnings that he might have been a fraud.
