Business Summary
Hostess Brands, formerly known as Interstate Bakeries Corporation, is a leading wholesale baker that sells and distributes its baked goods to supermarkets, mass marketers, and convenience stores. The privately-held bread and snack food manufacturer also sells directly to consumers through Hostess Brands retail bakery outlets. The company's brands include Twinkies, Wonder, Home Pride, Hostess Fruit Pies, and Ho-Hos. Founded in 1930 by Ralph L. Nafziger, Hostess Brands has headquarters in Irving, Texas.
Hostess filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2004 and emerged as a private company in February 2009. In January 2012, It filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company was burdened with 372 union agreements following its post-2004 bankruptcy restructuring led by Ripplewood Holdings, which led to Hostess' second bankruptcy filing. In January 2012, 83% of Hostess' 19,000 employees were unionized. As the result of an national strike imposed by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM) in November 2012, Hostess filed for Chapter 7 in bankruptcy court on November 16, 2012.

Hostess Brands' Corporate History
Founding and Regional Expansion
Ralph Leroy Nafziger founded Hostess Brands in 1930 as Interstate Bakeries Corporation with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1937, Interstate merged with the Schulze Baking Company, Inc., another Kansas City baker. In 1943, the company acquired Los Angeles-based Supreme Baking Company. In 1950, Interstate purchased New York-based O'Rourke Baking Company as part of its strategy to expand into new regions.
In 1951, Interstate acquired Milwaukee-based Mrs. Karl's Bakeries. Three years later, the company bought the Ambrosia Cake Company, the Remar Baking Company, and the Butter Cream Baking Company. In 1958, Interstate purchased the Campbell-Sell Baking Company that was based in Denver, Colorado. By the end of the 1950s, Interstate had added Pennsylvania-based Kingston Cake Bakery to its list of acquisitions.
