On April 1, 2008, founders Rachelle Hruska and Cameron Winklevoss launched Guest of a Guest as a hobby. At the time, Hruska was working as an assistant to Baron Capital Management CEO Ron Baron but left her job in May 2008 to pursue her new venture full-time. She had previously been running GofG in secrecy, afraid to risk her job at BCM. Winklevoss is also a founder of social networking site ConnectU and competed in the Beijing Olympics for the United States crew team. While the two were dating when they created GofG, they now work alongside as simply business partners, Hruska as editor and Winklevoss as publisher.
Shaping the Ship
At first, the content on Guest of a Guest paralleled Gothamist, covering everything from food to fashion. As print publications began to crumble, GofG realized that it had to develop a niche and began to focus on the twentysomething New York City tastemakers.
