Fender Musical Instruments Corporation is a privately-held manufacturer of guitars, basses, amplifiers and related equipment. Fender was founded in 1946 by Leo Fender, and is based out of Scottsdale, Arizona. Its notable guitars have been used by famous musicians such as Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Fender is the largest guitar seller in the United States. Fender's comprehensive portfolio of brands are led by the Fender brand and other brands such as Squire, Jackson, Guild, Ovation and Latin Percussion, in addition to Gretsch, EVH and Takamine which Fender is the licensee. The product portfolio of the company includes fretted instruments (electric, acoustic and bass guitars, banjos, ukuleles, mandolins and resonator guitars), guitar amplifiers, percussion instruments and accessories.
Fender's sells its guitars through direct-to-retail sales channels. In 2011, Fender guitar sales were through independent dealers, national, merchant or online dealers, and third party dealer. Fender does not have standalone stores.
