Flush with cash from the Mosaic spinoff, Cargill is undertaking an active acquisitions strategy, most prominently its August 2011 acquisition of Dutch animal-nutrition business Provimi Group for nearly $2.2 billion, its largest ever acquisition in its 150+ year history.
The company, which was founded in 1865 as a one grain storage warehouse in Conover, Iowa, is one of the largest, successful, family-owned food businesses with its roots in the pioneer farming lands of America's Midwest. The company's origins can be traced back over 140 years as a simple grain storage facility to a flourishing food business today.

Detailed Business Description: Cargill Incorporated
Cargill begins in Iowa under the leadership of W.W. Cargill: 1865 - 1899
William Wallace Cargill started the company at the close of the American Civil War in 1865. He acquired warehouses and took advantage of the great post-war agricultural and railroad expansion throughout the plains. Shortly his two brothers, Sam and James, joined his business venture and established the company's headquarters in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
In 1870, W.W.Cargill took advantage of the expansion of the Southern Minnesota Railroad by changing his headquarter to Albert Lea, Minnesota. By that time his brother, Sylvester S. Cargill, established the Victoria Elevator Company in Minneapolis.
In 1875, W.W.Cargill moved his family and headquartered to La Crosse, Wisconsin. He made a consistent choice in moving to La Crosse because that was the time at which the Milwaukee Road and the Southern Minnesota Division was connected.
