1911: Boscov's Founding
Boscov's, Inc. is a departmental stores operating company which was founded by Solomon Boscov in 1911. Solomon Boscov immigrated to Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1911 with $1.37 in cash. He worked with a traveling company as a salesman with $8 worth of merchandise. In 1911, Boscov founded the first of his namesake stores as the Economy Shoe Store and Dry Goods Annex in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania. Boscov also started a dry goods store in the family living room corner to save money to expand the business. In 1913, Boscov had occupied all the raw houses in the street for his business.
1950s to 1990s: Boscov's Expansion
In 1954, Boscov's son-in-law Edwin Lakin joined the business to help him in renovation and stores expansion. Albert Boscov, son of Solomon, entered family business after serving in the United States Navy.
