10gen, Inc. is an open source cloud computing start-up based in New York. Its founders, Dwight Merriman, Eliot Horowitz and Kevin Ryan, are all leaders in the web software space. Their new venture attempts to fill a void they found while scaling the servers at one of their previous companies, DoubleClick. As a result, the 10gen’s main product is MongoDB (from “hu-mongo-us”). MongoDB is an open-source web database designed by the company to scale with extra servers, while simultaneously being schema-less and using a variety of server-side languages. While the software is free—and gaining the support of tens of thousands of developers—MongoDB is also used by well-recognized websites such as SourceForge and the tech news site Business Insider. However, 10gen does offer commercial support ranging from $1000-$5000 per year to assist web developers in creating their dynamically mapped website infrastructures. 10gen is privately-held and is backed by several leading venture capital firms (see PrivCo VC/Funding Table: 10gen). 10gen, Inc. was founded in 2007.

As the Chief Technology Officer at DoubleClick, Dwight Merriman noticed several scaling problems with the servers he and his engineers had programmed. They just weren’t efficient. What was the point of buying server after server, which would only be used during an activity spike? Merriman sought out a better way. After DoubleClick was sold to Google in 2007, he founded 10gen with $500K in seed money and began working with Eliot Horowitz, along with Kevin Ryan on their vision of a scalable non-relational database.
Their team came up with MongoDB, an open-source database developed on the cloud computing platform. MongoDB allows its users to spread their data along several servers which can compute requests simultaneously.
